In April 2023, Scandinavian Airlines launched a direct flight route from Aalborg to New York. Though SAS has already closed the route, you might still be wondering: “Is Aalborg worth visiting?”
The short answer is yes.
Situated on one side of the Limfjord in Northern Jutland, this city of just over 140,000 residents has garnered significant attention recently. In 2023, Aalborg ranked 13th in Monocle Magazine’s Small Cities Index. And in 2019, Denmark’s fourth-largest city featured on the New York Times’ 52 Places to Go list.
Besides being compact, cozy, and friendly, Aalborg is the perfect launchpad for numerous nature experiences in the north of Jutland. From here, you can also easily reach other engaging cities worth a stop—including Aarhus and Copenhagen. While you should linger around for longer, one day in Aalborg will give you a taste of what good food and smart urban regeneration looks like.
Without further ado, here are the city’s must-see sights if you’re short on time.
Fjordbyen

Previously used by fishermen, Fjordbyen is now an intriguing residential area where sheds have become over 100 homes. People of multiple income levels and backgrounds call this neighborhood their home, and each house is decorated differently from one another.
Fjordbyen also has a cultural center where you can enjoy the company of the locals. Although you can walk around the area on your own, booking a guided tour is also possible. You can find out more here (page in Danish).
Fjordbyen is a 30-40-minute walk from the city center. You can also cycle here in just under 15 minutes.
Vestre Fjordpark

Close to Fjordbyen is Vestre Fjordpark, a favorite hangout spot among Aalborg’s residents on a rare sunny day. The area opened in 2017 and features a selection of swimming pools, along with play areas for kids and other leisure facilities.
Vestre Fjordpark is close to Fjordbyen. In addition to swimming, you’ll also find a 10-foot-tall diving board. It’s also close to the ferry stop for the boat to Egholm, a small island not far from the mainland.
Salling Rooftop

Salling Rooftop is on top of the Salling department store in the center of Aalborg. You’ll get an excellent view of the city from all directions, and you can also enjoy a selection of baked goods and hot drinks from the café.
If you’re in the mood for lunch or dinner, you can also enjoy numerous main courses from the rooftop restaurant. A selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages is also available.
Visiting the Salling Rooftop viewing platform is free. You can reach it via the elevators in the department store, which is accessible from Nytorv at street level. Opening times are:
- 10:00-20:00 (Monday-Friday)
- 10:00-18:00 (Saturday and Sunday)
Hjelmerstald and Langes Gård

Cute and colorful houses are the one thing I love more than anything else about Danish cities, and Hjelmerstald is a street in Aalborg where you can see this timeless architecture for yourself. It’s largely residential, but you’ll find a selection of shops selling sculptures and whatnot at the Langes Gård courtyard.
Peder Barkes Gade is another picturesque street if you’re looking for examples of old Danish homes. While you’re welcome to wander around, remember that people live in these homes and to be respectful.
Aalborg Havnefront

Walking along the waterfront is, in my opinion, the best thing to do in Aalborg. The former industrial area has undergone significant regeneration and features the Utzon Center, dedicated to Jørn Utzon—the iconic architect behind the design of the Sydney Opera House.
Aalborg Havnefront is also where you’ll find the Musikkens Hus concert hall, and if you’re feeling hungry, you might want to stop at Aalborg Street Food. The waterfront has several attractive modern apartments, too… just in case you decide that you want to stay in Aalborg for a little longer.
The Best That Aalborg Has to Offer in a Short Trip
Denmark’s fourth-biggest city is a fantastic place to explore for a few days, but you can get a lot done in one day. If you don’t have much time, you can stick with the best things to do in Aalborg that we’ve listed in this guide.
From a new-and-improved waterfront to cute cobblestone streets, Aalborg is an ideal visit if you want to visit one of the country’s lesser-explored regions. The city is also easy to get around, with good transport links to the rest of Denmark—plus international flights from Europe and further afield.
